Dances of India



BHARATANATYAM:
       Bharatanatyam belong to the south India state of Tamilnadu. Bharatanatyam is more popular in south Indian states of Tamilnadu and karnataka. It is one of the popular classical Indian dances. It is almost 2,000 years old. In the past this dance was practised and performed in the temples by a class of devadasis.It was the past of the religious rituals and has a long and horary past. It is believed that Bharatanatyam was revealed by Lord Brahma to bharata, a famous sage who then included this this sacred dance in sanskrit text Natya Shastra.



KATHAKALI:
        The word 'Katha' means story.Kathakali means a story play or a dance or drama. This dance belongs to the south-western coastal state of Kerala, The dance is extremely colourful with costumes,flowering scarves,ornaments and crowns. The dancers use a specific type of symbolic makeup to portray various roles.The stories from the two epics, the Mahabharatha and the Ramayana,as well as the puranas constitute the theme of the Kathakali dance. The most is dance to the musical composition,involving dialogues,narration and continuity.




ODISSI:
        Odissi is considered as the oldest Indian dance on the basis of archival evidence. This dance Belongs to East Indian state of Orissa.Tribanga, the  three-body bend characteristics this dance form.It has a many body movements according to the oddisi music. In its present Odissi is well codified  classical dance form of India.Odissi is considered as a dance of love,joy and Intense passion,pure divine and humans.





KATHAK:
         This dance form originated in North India and very similar to Bharathanatyam form.Kathak(the art of story telling) means story teller and it  developed as a dance form  in which a solo dancer tells and interprets stories from mythology. During the nineteenth century Kathak enjoyed a  revival and gained prominence among the kings and zamindars not only as a form of entertainment but also as a classical art form.





KUCHIPUDDI:
          The Kuchipudi dance is a dance belongs to southern state of Andhra pradesh.It is like Kathakali, and is performed by women.The movements in Kuchipudi are quicksilver and scintillating, rounded and fleet-footed.A special number in the Kuchipudi repertoire is called tarangam,  in which a dancer balances herself on the rim of a brass plate and executes steps to the beat of a drum. At times she places a pot full of water 
on her head and dances on the brass plate.
